I was wondering about the ruling of advertising. Big companies like Google and Facebook derive all of their revenue from advertising, as well as smaller advertising companies such as The Trade Desk, Magnite, and PubMatic. Just wondering if those stocks are halal or advertising is a not halal sector.
Salam,
There is nothing wrong with advertising.
It is much more about the content of the advertising. The Trade Desk itself only brokers advertising space, so it is compliant. So are Magnite and PubMatic.
Facebook is critical to many, however we need to look at Facebook’s advertising policies here. Facebook prohibits advertising of any kind for e.g. alcohol, tobacco and weapons.
Take a look at the advertising guidelines of the individual companies.
It is not without reason that companies like Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft etc. are listed in the S&P 500 Shariah or in the Dow Jones Islamic Market.
I hope I could help you a little bit how to proceed with the revenue segment “advertising”.
No scholar!
